CefdinirThird Party Manufacturing in India
Looking to get Cefdinir manufactured under your brand? Our WHO-GMP certified partner facilities support PCD franchise partners and global export opportunities structured across 25+ countries.
Mechanism of Action
Cefdinir works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. As a third-generation cephalosporin, it has a broader spectrum of activity and greater stability against beta-lactamase enzymes compared to earlier generation cephalosporins. The beta-lactam ring in cefdinir binds irreversibly to PBPs, which are enzymes responsible for catalysing the transpeptidation reaction that cross-links the peptidoglycan chains in the bacterial cell wall. By disrupting this final cross-linking step, cefdinir weakens the structural integrity of the cell wall, causing the bacterial cell to undergo osmotic lysis and die. Cefdinir is particularly effective against both Gram-positive organisms such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative organisms including Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella species. Its chemical structure features a vinyl group at the 3-position and a hydroxyimino group at the 7-position side chain, which confer enhanced oral bioavailability and extended antimicrobial activity. The drug is well absorbed orally with approximately 25 percent bioavailability in capsule form and higher absorption from the suspension formulation. It is primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys, with a half-life of approximately 1.7 hours that supports twice-daily or once-daily dosing regimens.
Therapeutic Uses & Indications
Therapeutic Uses
Cefdinir is indicated for the treatment of a range of mild to moderate bacterial infections:
- Community-Acquired Pneumonia: Effective against Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis, the most common causative pathogens.
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media: Frequently prescribed for paediatric ear infections, with a convenient once or twice daily dosing schedule.
- Acute Sinusitis and Pharyngitis: Used for upper respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible strains of Streptococcus pyogenes and other pathogens.
- Uncomplicated Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Active against staphylococci and streptococci responsible for cellulitis, impetigo, and wound infections.
Why Manufacturers Choose Cefdinir
Cefdinir is one of the most prescribed oral cephalosporins globally, with a well-established market in India, the United States, and across Asia. The drug is off-patent, making it an attractive option for generic pharmaceutical manufacturers who can differentiate on quality, pricing, and supply reliability. Indian manufacturers produce cefdinir tablets and dry powder for oral suspension, serving both the domestic PCD franchise market and high-volume export channels. The API is widely available from approved sources in India and China, and the molecule benefits from inclusion in multiple treatment guidelines. This makes cefdinir one of the most sought-after molecules for third party manufacturing in India, with consistent demand from PCD franchise operators and export-oriented companies.
