Mechanism of Action

Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) + Povidone is a sterile ophthalmic solution formulated as an artificial tear substitute for the management of dry eye syndrome and ocular surface disorders.

Polyvinyl Alcohol is a synthetic hydrophilic polymer that acts as a wetting agent and viscosity enhancer. It lowers the surface tension of the tear film, improving its spreading and retention across the corneal and conjunctival surfaces. PVA binds to the ocular mucin layer, stabilizing the tear film and reducing tear evaporation. This creates a protective lubricating film over the cornea that mimics the natural mucin layer of healthy tears.

Povidone (Polyvinylpyrrolidone or PVP) is a biocompatible polymer that acts as a demulcent and viscoelastic agent. It enhances water retention on the ocular surface by increasing the viscosity and residence time of the tear film. Povidone has excellent mucoadhesive properties, allowing it to adhere to the ocular epithelium and provide sustained lubrication. It also has mild cleansing properties, helping to remove debris and irritants from the ocular surface.

Together, PVA and Povidone provide dual-action ocular lubrication: PVA improves tear film spreading and stability, while Povidone enhances moisture retention and prolongs contact time. This combination effectively relieves the symptoms of dry eye including burning, stinging, foreign body sensation, and blurred vision. The preservative-free formulations available in unit-dose vials are particularly suitable for patients with sensitive eyes or those requiring frequent instillation.

Therapeutic Uses & Indications

Therapeutic Uses

Polyvinyl Alcohol + Povidone eye drops are used for the management of dry eye syndrome and ocular surface conditions:

  • Dry Eye Syndrome (Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca): First-line therapy for mild to moderate dry eye, providing symptomatic relief from ocular discomfort, grittiness, and burning sensation.
  • Contact Lens-Related Dryness: Used as a rewetting and lubricating drop for contact lens wearers experiencing dryness and discomfort.
  • Post-Operative Ocular Surgery: Lubrication following cataract surgery, LASIK, and other refractive procedures to promote epithelial healing and comfort.
  • Environmental Dryness: Temporary relief from ocular dryness caused by air conditioning, computer use, prolonged reading, and dry climatic conditions.
  • Sjogren's Syndrome: Part of the management protocol for dry eye associated with autoimmune conditions affecting tear production.
  • Ocular Surface Protection: Used as a protective lubricant in patients with exposure keratopathy, Bell's palsy, or incomplete lid closure.

Why Manufacturers Choose Polyvinyl Alcohol + Povidone

Artificial tear products represent a growing segment of the Indian ophthalmic market, driven by increasing screen time, contact lens usage, and awareness of dry eye syndrome. PVA + Povidone eye drops are among the most commonly prescribed lubricating eye drops due to their proven efficacy, favorable safety profile, and affordability. The product is available in both multi-dose (5ml, 10ml) and preservative-free unit-dose formats, offering manufacturers flexibility in product positioning. Indian manufacturers benefit from well-established production infrastructure for sterile ophthalmics, strong domestic demand, and growing export opportunities to Middle Eastern, African, and Southeast Asian markets.

This makes Polyvinyl Alcohol + Povidone eye drops a consistently sought-after product range for third party manufacturing in India, with strong demand from PCD franchise networks and institutional buyers.
